Description

Sheriff Walt Longmire and Henry Standing Bear embark on their latest adventure in this novella set in the world of Craig Johnson’s New York Times bestselling Longmire series—the basis for the hit drama Longmire, now on Netflix

Craig Johnson's new novel, The Western Star, will be available from Viking in Fall 2017.

When Wyoming highway patrolman Rosey Wayman is transferred to the beautiful and imposing landscape of the Wind River Canyon, an area the troopers refer to as no-man's-land because of the lack of radio communication, she starts receiving “officer needs assistance” calls. The problem? They're coming from Bobby Womack, a legendary Arapaho patrolman who met a fiery death in the canyon almost a half-century ago. With an investigation that spans this world and the next, Sheriff Walt Longmire and Henry Standing Bear take on a case that pits them against a legend: The Highwayman.

I was a little disappointed in the cruiser clock gaffe: at the start of Ch8 Walt says the trooper's clock was an hour slow, when it was actually an hour ahead of the actual time (clock says 12:34am, but it was really only 11:34pm). Of course, both he and Henry had just nearly frozen to death in the Wind River while rescuing Rose, so I eventually decided to cut them some slack. Too bad we also didn't get at least 100 pages of Vic Moretti, Ruby and Katie Longmire keeping the good citizens of Durant safe in Walt and Henry's absence.

I'm a big fan of Craig Johnson's work. His ability to paint a picture of the Wyoming countryside and build a compelling mystery is the essence of great writing. The Longmire novels are each unique to themselves, but the Highwayman is a welcome departure from the usual murder and mayhem. Can't wait for the next one!

The only problem with these Longmire novels is that I have read all of them and now have to wait for the next release. Thanks, great fun, it's like your there with them. Also take a look at the google images of this canyon. Quite a piece of construction.
  • Pace of the Highwayman

The pace of this book has you feeling like you are running at a trot - you know something is going down but you don't know what and you are scurrying, prepared to burst into a sprint at any moment should the need arise. This book makes sense and yet is asking you to believe in the impossible. Longmire and Henry are a fantastic team and they are written so well that you can hear the leather they are wearing creak. The setting is another character and the story is a one off, unconnected to the major plot apparently, but just as good as every other book in this series. Well worth reading. You will devour it in one sitting.
  • Keeps you hooked!

Very entertaining and kept me glued till the end. The plot is about as complex as a made for TV movie but it was just the right mix of mystery and intrigue. I wish it was longer and there was a little more depth to the story/characters. But it was good, all the necessary parts were there for a quick thrill read and I dig in and enjoyed it very much.

Another, new, superb Wyoming based Walt Longmire, Henry Standing Bear novel by Craig Johnson. It's almost as good as being there.

Love all the Longmire books. The characters are meticulously drawn and remain true throughout the series. I did miss some of the "regulars" from Abseroka County, but Walt and Henry, and the white owl are here, and that's enough sometimes.
