I really should make the title more exciting, like, Escape From Johor! But it is what it is. In 2020 we managed to race ahead of the virus lockdowns and drive around the Malayan Peninsular vlogging and blogging as we went. We have made documentaries about the history of Malaysia and written a couple of guidebooks, so this trip was something of recce for future documentaries. Our intention was to go to places that we had not been to in order to tease out some of the stories that most tourists would miss and perhaps encourage people to go and take an interest in some of the lesser known areas.
We posted a video every day but I am always irritated by how little one can say in a ten minute video and so wrote up some of my notes as blogs to accompany the videos. My wife also blogs and takes photos so we thought we should put some photos and the texts together with links to the videos all in one place and so this is the result!
Here you will come across Captain Speedy and his eighteen elephants, the opium fuelled party that inspired the spearing of a British Resident, lost cities and the ennui of rainy days! Yes, I occasionally use words like ennui. So yes, this is a travel book with a multi-media edge and a couple of Brits Abroad in search of Gin and Tonic in a land all too fond of sugary cordials.
