I received a copy of this for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Well, I will start out by saying that this is definitely not the type of Star Trek story that I am used to reading. This was a fast read and the way the characters spoke seemed almost too contemporary to our times.
That being said, the way the characters spoke and acted made them instantly relatable. The story kept the Star Trek feel without the drag that you can sometimes get by the futuristic technical jargon that tends to fill page after page in many Star Trek books. Not that there is necessarily anything wrong with the technical jargon. It definitely makes the universe feel more solid, but Peter David shows that you don't have to always include that to maintain the feel.
Though I have read several Star Trek Books, this is the first of the New Frontiers stories that I have read. When that happens, I like to comment on how easy it was on a newcomer to jump in to the storyline. Not to harp, but just like in Star Trek, you can definitely start here, but you will feel that there is a long history between some of the characters that you have missed out on. The good news is, David provides all of the backstory that you need to enjoy the story presented in this book, but you will find yourself wanting to go back and read what you have missed for sure.
My only real complaint is that I found the S/he and hir usage very distracting. I do approve of his boldness in using it though so it balances out. I get the feeling that the author, although a long term and very prolific writer of speculative fiction, is very in touch with what is going on in our world and tries to reflect that.
Highly recommended for Fans of Star Trek and adventure style science fiction.
