Description

A former paramedic’s "thrilling, captivating" (Booklist), and mordantly funny account of a decade spent as a first responder in Atlanta saving lives and connecting with the drama and occasional beauty that lies inside catastrophe.

In the aftermath of 9/11 Kevin Hazzard felt that something was missing from his life—his days were too safe, too routine. A failed salesman turned local reporter, he wanted to test himself, see how he might respond to pressure and danger. He signed up for emergency medical training and became, at age twenty-six, a newly minted EMT running calls in the worst sections of Atlanta. His life entered a different realm—one of blood, violence, and amazing grace.

Thoroughly intimidated at first and frequently terrified, he experienced on a nightly basis the adrenaline rush of walking into chaos. But in his downtime, Kevin reflected on how people’s facades drop away when catastrophe strikes. As his hours on the job piled up, he realized he was beginning to see into the truth of things. There is no pretense five beats into a chest compression, or in an alley next to a crack den, or on a dimly lit highway where cars have collided. Eventually, what had at first seemed impossible happened: Kevin acquired mastery. And in the process he was able to discern the professional differences between his freewheeling peers, what marked each—as he termed them—as “a tourist,” “true believer,” or “killer.”

Combining indelible scenes that remind us of life’s fragile beauty with laugh-out-loud moments that keep us smiling through the worst, A Thousand Naked Strangers is an absorbing read about one man’s journey of self-discovery—a trip that also teaches us about ourselves.

This book captures most feelings from education, to bs calls, to terrifying ones, to being completely unorganized. Good work. Good read for anyone interested.

This book was recommended by another civilian medic and friend of mine. I am a deployed army medic and I read the whole thing in three days in between missions. This was such a great read. The madness of it all is what makes our job worth it. Nothing more than pure insanity.

I'm an EMT, a lot of what's in this book is true, I've been there, done it but it's very well worth the read, I too was an EMT for 10 years, day, night and afternoon shifts, missing your family, their events, your events, burnout is real and alive, I miss it, thanks for the great book

Normally I read books before I go to bed. But with this one I quickly noticed that an hour or 2 quickly passed and I was more awake than when I laid down withthe book. It will keep you awake, not only it's content, but also how well it is written. It's exciting!

Once I started, I couldn't put it down. It's almost as if I'm reading my own story-recorded and reproduced in someone else's words. Your story has been an eerie reminder of so many truths in our field that outsiders just can't understand. Thanks for the great read, and congrats on moving forward brother.

Do you want to know what it's like to be a Paramedic? What it's REALLY like? Then read this book. As a Paramedic, former Grady Medic with 25 years of experience under my belt (yes the author and I were co-workers) I can honestly say this is the best book I've read about our career. It truly covers what it feels like to be a paramedic at a high performance urban ambulance service. While written from Kevin's point of view his thoughts and feelings, laughs and tears mimic what so many of us paramedics feel. I laughed, I cried, I closed my eyes and I was back at Grady, lights flashing, sirens blaring, snatching another from the jaws of death. A truly all encompassing excellent read. 5 stars.

Excellent book. Tells an exciting but realistic story of a real-life paramedic. Kevin Hazzard's wild ride is certainly worth the read; telling the story you want to hear, while explaining all aspects of a paramedics job, the good, the bad, and everything in between. Whether you're looking to be a emergency worker of just looking for an exciting story about some of societies most exciting jobs, this book will satisfy.
