This author has an unique way of storytelling that is gut wrenching in its brutality but keeps me right there even through all the cringe worthy moments. The build of exquisite characters with unreal stamina and resolve to overcome horrible situations is terrific. In this one there’s Charlee, a young woman that has lived in slavery for too many years. During one escape she encounters an up and coming musician, Jay with his own demons. A connection is formed that helps Charlee through torturous days and lead s Jay to write songs that propels him to stardom. When they reconnect Jay is in a position to thwart Charlee’s jailer. These two characters are so broken but still strong and determined to overcome horrendous pasts. A terrific romance develops between Jay and Charlee as they help each other somewhat heal. Of course, Charlee’s nemesis won’t give up and it’s a fight to the finish. Such a good villain! There are a couple of fantastic secondary characters in Charlee’s longtime protector Nathan and Jay’s lead bodyguard Tony. Both a former Marines and have eyes for each other. FYI, Tony is a woman. This is not a story for the faint of heart. Enthralling storytelling and mesmerizing characters makes this a thrilling read. 4.5 stars

This book is so messed up. It was almost too sick to continue reading but I surged on hoping it would have a good ending. Needless to say, it was disappointing at best. I’ve never given a negative review on a book before. This one won that prize. Ugh!
