Description

A man dwelling in darkness must shine the light of truth on a deadly deception. Lord Julian Caldicott has come home from the war in ragged health and with a reputation in tatters. All he wants is to recuperate in private without bringing any further scandal on the family’s good name. His godmother inveigles him into serving as her escort to a rural house party, whereupon circumstances conspire to prevent Julian from resuming his reclusive existence. Julian becomes the subject of rumors, lies, and whispers, and soon he’s faced with a choice: Wage one more battle for honor’s sake, or be branded a traitor to all that he holds dear. He will enlist unlikely allies, face old demons, and vex every other guest on the premises, but he will not stop until he’s brought a criminal to justice–or dies trying.

Reviews

  • Intriguing characters acting like adults

Nice to have a veteran of even a historical war have post-war issues, but not be stereotyped. The characters are so well drawn, you’ll feel like you’ve settled in with old friends. The byplay between the aristocratic gentleman and the servants was reminiscent of Dorothy L Sayers, if you’re a fan of her mysteries. And the leads are every bit as fascinating and human. The women are delightfully real. I was whooping with laughter at the rude drinking song scene. And there’s some delicious testosterone-laden competition served up. The clues are all there, but can you see & follow them like our hero? I’m off to buy the next. Definitely keeper shelf material. (The author was generous enough to provide this advance reader copy. But I went & bought the print version because it’s that good & I enjoy going back & seeing where she led me astray.)
  • Amazing & well written start to a brand new series!

Lord Julian Caldicott returns home from a stint as a soldier somewhat the worse for his experience. While the military refused to brand him a traitor, rumors of scandal still attach to him in polite society. Coerced by his Godmother into accompanying her to a house party, Lord Julian is repeatedly forced to defend his honor and the honor of his previous intended when she is assaulted. Mysteries abound in this amazing and well written start to a brand new series from the incredible Grace Burrowes. The period language, ethics and customs are spot on, as is usual in a Burrowes novel, increasing the reader’s enjoyment. While this novel, as all of Ms. Burrowes books, can be read as a standalone, the reader will not be disappointed by planning to read the entire series. I certainly intend to! This book was provided by the author without any requirement for a review, positive or otherwise. All opinions are 100% my own.
