Description

Stanley Bentworth is not all that tough. Previously a homicide cop, he drank his way out of a job and now runs a one-man private eye agency. When a wealthy financier needs an anonymous blackmailer found in a life and death situation, Stanley seizes the chance to earn a fee.

If he fails, the blackmailer outs his client to the mob, giving the client a one-way ticket to the landfill with Stanley an unwilling passenger on that ride.

He knows he must not fail, no small feat given that Stanley Bentworth is not all that tough.

The story moves well and the writing is decent. It just lacks a level of excitement. I read before bed. At one point I forgot I was in the middle of a book. A little more pop and thrill and this would have been a great book.

An average book/story that would be better if occasional vulgarities didn't detract from it. Perhaps the f-word is common with some cultures, but not with anyone around me on a daily basis. I nearly stopped reading when it first appeared, as I have done with other books. I won't read another by this author.
  • Loved the wit and freshness

I thought this was going to be a typical noir clone but it was much more. While resembling that genre, this story has its own identity. It’s witty in its own fresh way. The characters and plot are sound. The emotions are authentic. It never feels rehashed at all. Admirable.

I accidentally downloaded this book from a previously to me unknown author. I am a readaholic of crime authors and unless the words grab me & I can feel the story which I cannot put down, I don’t read the book. I’ve even thrown some away after a few pages. This guy? Where did he come from? He hooked me after the 1st page, and continued to hold my rapt attention as I addictively turned the rest of the pages - until, unfortunately, the end. All I can say is, “More!!”
