Description

A fascinating, never-before-reported look into how Rick Perry, in his 2006 reelection campaign in Texas, had academics conduct real-time experiments to study what makes people vote--revealing a new side of a major politician and a game-changing trend in American politics.

Despite his folksy personality and disdain for East Coast "elitists," Texas governor Rick Perry helped spark a revolution in campaign politics. For his 2006 reelection effort, his top strategist, the imposing and profane Dave Carney, convinced Perry to invite a quartet of academics into the war room to gauge the effectiveness of various campaign tools. In the heat of the campaign, they ran live randomized experiments testing candidate appearances, yard signs, television ads, etc. No candidate had done this before, and no one has done it since.

Now, in this chapter-sized pull-out from his upcoming book, The Victory Lab, Sasha Issenberg brings us this ground-breaking story. With unprecedented access to Perry's campaign team, including Carney, Issenberg shows how the four academics, known in Perry's world as "the eggheads," made great strides in understanding what works and what doesn't in elections.

Written with energy, insight, and first-class reporting, Rick Perry and His Eggheads shows how social science, political machinations, and big personalities rebelling against conventional wisdom are reshaping the way we elect our leaders.

Campaigns have traditionally involved media buys, phone banks, yard signs and other collateral, and other activities long seen as vital to a candidate's victory. This book tells the story of how the campaign staff of Texas politician Rick Perry, along with four political science researchers, sought a more analytical approach to campaigning. In the process, they have upended the inbred world of campaigns and campaign consulting. There is a reason Rick Perry has consistently and repeatedly bested opponents many, including this reader, thought would surely defeat him. Many, again including I, thought it was (dumb?) luck. It wasn't; sadly for his past and current opponents, quite the opposite actually. Not only does Perry pick strong and bright people to run his campaigns, he gives them the latitude and freedom to do their job and win him elections, even to the point of rewriting the "How to's" of campaigning itself. Anyone involved in campaigns, from candidates to political consultants, from those who follow them to those who have experienced the fun of volunteering for a campaign, will take away from this text that a new way of running a campaign has dawning upon us. Disclaimer: I am not now, nor ever have been, affiliated with Governor Perry's past campaigns, nor his current campaign.

Interesting concept which gives some insight into the behind the scenes planning and strategizing behind campaigns. Would have liked to see more examples and analysis of some of the results that they found.

Funny that he would trust scientists to judge people's feelings but he doesn' t believe in global warming. If Perry wasn't such a despicable human being this might be a more compelling book.

A very short read that gives me hope that politics may actually find out what the PEOPLE want and use it to get a sensible campaign that the public can enjoy rather than loathe. Refreshing!
