Description

An all-new adventure inspired by the award-winning videogame from BioWare!

The universe is under siege. Every fifty thousand years, a race of sentient machines invades our galaxy to harvest all organic life-forms. They are the Reapers.

Two people who know the truth are desperately searching for a way to stop the cycle: Navy admiral David Anderson and his partner, Kahlee Sanders. They have uncovered grisly evidence proving that the Reaper threat is real. But in so doing they have exposed the machinations of Cerberus, a secretive paramilitary organization, and its mysterious leader, the Illusive Man—putting David and Kahlee in mortal danger, for Cerberus will stop at nothing to protect its secrets.

But along the way, they find an unlikely ally in Gillian Grayson, a young woman with extraordinary powers. Once the subject of horrifying scientific experiments, Gillian is now free—and beginning to master her deadly abilities. But after learning that Cerberus was responsible for the death of her father, Gillian swears vengeance against the group and the Illusive Man—threatening to unravel everything Kahlee and David are fighting for.

The way to describe this book is simply this: the other mass effect written by Drew were hard to put down but Dietz made this book hard to pick up. If you really want to read just go to the library. It is not worth buying.

This book was fine at first but slowly declined. *SPOILER ALERT* too many main characters died it was a real let down.

What a let down after so a fine series of books from the Mass Effect universe. Poorly researched, poorly written, and just plain bad.
  • Interesting at first...lazy towards the end!

I am a big fan of Mass Effect. I loved the first three books. I wasn't sure if this book was going to be good due to a different author writing it. Over all, it was an ok read. To be honest, I was intrigued and interested in the beginning of this book. But sadly I was disappointed towards the end. It seemed like the writer got lazy. It would be great if Drew Karpyshyn wrote this book instead.

If your looking for good dialogue and intelligent characters avoid this book. I've stopped reading at chapter 5 because this feels like I'm reading a book written for a middle school project. Somehow a girl with autism in previous books is cured without any explanation and so far displayed 0 autistic traits, unless you count a stubbornness seen in many teen characters. The dialogue is cheesy and clichéd with much of the dialogue sounding like it was written in E-mails between characters rather than natural dialogue between two people actually in the same room. So far I've had to put my suspension of disbelief to the test, as early in the book as a former prominent intergalactic admiral named David Anderson is able to go undercover without doing anything to his face. At one point he switches his picture with a former crooks picture in a database so he can go undercover, he isn't caught because the guy recognized him as a famouse admiral but because the their oral Anderson disguised himself as was shot the day before by the very same thieves they are trying to fool. Keep in mind this is a space station with billions of people much like a planet Updated: I finished reading the book and it just got worse especially towards the end. There is no resolution with any of the characters that had major page time devoted to them, and as the book progresses you have no sympathy for the Che characters, and their intelligence continues to decrease. The book ends in a way that does nothing to service the story but prop up background for the game.
  • A travesty. Should have never been published

What's left to say really? I place the blame for this disaster at the feet of both Dietz and Bioware equally. Dietz, for having done zero research for a book that is based on well established lore from three previous novels, two massively successful video games, and three comic book series; and Bioware for allowing this tripe to be published at all. It's a slap in the face to all of the fans of this series that have been loyal since 2007 and have made this franchise as successful as it has become. If this is what Bioware thinks of its fans, then perhaps the fans should think twice next time before buying something else from And shame on William Dietz for not even bothering to do the simplest research for this book. How would you feel if you read a Star Wars novel where Han Solo was described as a pacifist wimp and Princess Leia cried all the time? Well, this book is even worse than that. Buy the other three novels in this series and forget that this one ever happened.

This book, if it can be called that, is an awful thing. The author obviously has no respect for the series or its fans. The book is filled with inaccuracies and misinformation. A disappointing and pitiful black mark on an otherwise spotless series. Hopefully any future books will be written by someone who is actually a fan of the series and wants to do the Mass Effect universe and its fans justice.
  • A travesty to the series.

I'll put it simply, the story is so full of errors you'd think a child wrote it. I don't think Mr. Dietz knows anything about Mass Effect beyond the generic descriptions found on Wikipedia. This book has no business being considered Mass Effect canon. Do yourself a favor and avoid this garbage.
