Description

The thrilling prequel to the award-winning video game from BioWare

Every advanced society in the galaxy relies on the technology of the Protheans, an ancient species that vanished fifty thousand years ago. After discovering a cache of Prothean technology on Mars in 2148, humanity is spreading to the stars; the newest interstellar species, struggling to carve out its place in the greater galactic community.

On the edge of colonized space, ship commander and Alliance war hero David Anderson investigates the remains of a top secret military research station; smoking ruins littered with bodies and unanswered questions. Who attacked this post and for what purpose? And where is Kahlee Sanders, the young scientist who mysteriously vanished from the base–hours before her colleagues were slaughtered?

Sanders is now the prime suspect, but finding her creates more problems for Anderson than it solves. Partnered with a rogue alien agent he can’t trust and pursued by an assassin he can’t escape, Anderson battles impossible odds on uncharted worlds to uncover a sinister conspiracy . . . one he won’t live to tell about. Or so the enemy thinks.

BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Drew Karpyshyn's Mass Effect: Ascension.

Wonderfully written, brilliantly paced, full of believable and engrossing dialogue, and packed with truly great tension, this book is a fantastic expansion of the Mass Effect universe. Masterfully paints a beautiful picture of the events that led up to the first game, and it was very satisfying as the pieces fell into place hinting towards the events that happen in the games. It very quickly became difficult to put down, and I’m beyond excited to see where the story goes next.

It really lays the foundation for the franchise and gives us more insight into David Anderson as a character. Not to mention I had always wondered about his past with Saren since playing the first game!

If you are a fan of the Mass Effect games you will not regret reading this book. Its very well written and stays true to the Mass Effect lore. This is basically a prequel to the first game; you learn more about Captain Anderson as a character as well as Saren's gradual descent into madness and full submission to Sovereign. Highly recommend this book.

Playing ME3 made me want to steep myself a little deeper into the mythology of the series, and this book did not disappoint. I will be returning to Mass Effect 1 to replay as soon as I am done with the end of the third, just simply because I want to experience it with the backstory of this book.
  • Great back story to ME1!!!

I read this after completing Mass Effect 1 and 2. As a result, I often felt as if I were reading the codex from the game. The story therefore didn't really have any forward momentum until about 3/4 through. Still interesting, however, as it provides insight into Saren's motivations.
