Description

The U.S. Ryder Cup team ended nearly a decade of European dominance in 2008 by laying aside their individual pursuits for a single week and bonding like brothers on golf's greatest stage.

Inspired by team-building techniques used by Navy SEALs, Ryder Cup captain and ABC commentator Paul Azinger divided the 12-man team into small groups, or pods. Then, with guidance from corporate team-building specialist and licensed family therapist Ron Braund, he placed golfers based on their personality types, rather than their golf games. The relationships among teammates created an atmosphere where Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, Kenny Perry, and the other U.S. golfers could perform at their highest levels.

In Cracking the Code: The Winning Ryder Cup Strategy: Make It Work for You, Azinger and Braund tell the compelling story of how the U.S. team members, half of them Ryder Cup rookies, overcame their underdog status to bring the cup back to America. In the telling, they offer team-building techniques that apply to sports, business, and beyond.

I thought this was a pleasant and fast read. I enjoy the Ryder Cup and this offered insights into the preparation that goes into planning for the Cup. You can hear Paul's voice as you read the book, which makes it a very enjoyable read.

Great book for golf sports and life. A quick simple read, couple hours. The same principles of leadership when dealing with teams of any type are applicable. Great business applicability beyond the typical vision and motivation stuff, these principles make teams work by their natural forces vs "managing" teamwork. Let's see if Pavin takes this sage advice. Another US win, priceless.

Zinger gives the inside story as Capt. America....the pod strategy was brilliant and got the best out of our u.s. team.. Great stories on the course during the matches. Couldn't put it down... Now see what Pavin does...

You can read it in 1.5 hours and it takes you behind the ropes for the best Golf event every two years. CTC is also a blueprint for how to effectively manage teams whether on the course or in the corporate world...not "teachy" at all. Sit back and enjoy...

Neat perspective that Azinger took to picking his Ryder Cup team - seems like a good extension to business too. Frankly the US Ryder Cup team stunk it up for years and they came into the 2008 matches arguably as one of the lesser talented teams. No Tiger and Phil wasn't playing great. But looks like the "pod" methodology worked pretty well! Hope to see the same methodology used this year. Cool approach for Azinger to take. Good read even if you don't golf. And if you do golf it's a MUST read.
