Description

Reflecting on forty years of matrimony, John Piper exalts the biblical meaning of marriage over its emotion, exhorting couples to keep their covenant for all the best reasons.
Even in the days when people commonly stayed married "'til death do us part," there has never been a generation whose view of marriage was high enough, says Pastor John Piper. That is all the more true in our casual times.
Though personal selfishness and cultural bondage obstruct the wonder of God's purpose, it is found in God's Word, where his design can awaken a glorious vision capable of freeing every person from small, Christ-ignoring, romance-intoxicated views. As Piper explains in reflecting on forty years of matrimony: "Most foundationally, marriage is the doing of God. And ultimately, marriage is the display of God. It displays the covenant-keeping love between Christ and his people to the world in a way that no other event or institution does. Marriage, therefore, is not mainly about being in love. It's mainly about telling the truth with our lives. And staying married is not about staying in love. It is about keeping covenant and putting the glory of Christ's covenant-keeping love on display."
This Momentary Marriage unpacks the biblical vision, its unexpected contours, and its weighty implications for married, single, divorced, and remarried alike.

I would say right now, outside of the Scriptures, it's my favorite book. The advice Piper gives about marriage has it's roots saturated deep in gospel soil. He paints the beautiful picture of how it was Christ's hands that were nailed to cross, even though they never touched sin. And you & your spouse's sin went to the cross with Christ, and so now, as believers, the call is to engage one another, not in reaction to each other's flaws & failures, but in response to the Substitutional Savior who gave Himself up for you. Great encouragement. He deals much more with the foundations of marriage than practical everyday examples. At the same time, He is very honest about the heights & depths of marriage, even his own. Not exactly sure yet where I stand on His complete prohibition of divorce & remarriage (except in the case of death) in chapter 14. Good things to ponder though. And I found the Bonhoeffer excerpts in the start of every chapter to be very rich & encouraging as well. Recommended read, for sure.
  • Would recommend this for any premarital counseling or seasoned married couple

This book is written to help teach you biblically what marriage is and should be like. It strips away, early on, your 'culture induced' misconceptions of what marriage should be and replaces them with what God says it was designed to be. Phenomenal book! I am reading it for the second time with my college study.
