The Second Grinnell Expedition of 1853-55 sought to determine the fate of John Franklin. While it failed in that effort, Dr. Elisha Kane and his men penetrated further north than any explorer before them and were the first white men to discover the open Polar Sea. Forced to abandon their ship Advance to the ice packs in 1855, their journey home became an epic tale of polar survival.
