Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR, BOOKPAGE, AND SHELF AWARENESS  “Paula McLain is considered the new star of historical fiction, and for good reason. Fans of The Paris Wife will be captivated by Circling the Sun, which . . . is both beautifully written and utterly engrossing.”—Ann Patchett, Country Living

This powerful novel transports readers to the breathtaking world of Out of Africa—1920s Kenya—and reveals the extraordinary adventures of Beryl Markham, a woman before her time. Brought to Kenya from England by pioneering parents dreaming of a new life on an African farm, Beryl is raised unconventionally, developing a fierce will and a love of all things wild. But after everything she knows and trusts dissolves, headstrong young Beryl is flung into a string of disastrous relationships, then becomes caught up in a passionate love triangle with the irresistible safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton and the writer Baroness Karen Blixen. Brave and audacious and contradictory, Beryl will risk everything to have Denys’s love, but it’s ultimately her own heart she must conquer to embrace her true calling and her destiny: to fly.

Praise for Circling the Sun

“In McLain’s confident hands, Beryl Markham crackles to life, and we readers truly understand what made a woman so far ahead of her time believe she had the power to soar.”—Jodi Picoult, author of Leaving Time

“Enchanting . . . a worthy heir to [Isak] Dinesen . . . Like Africa as it’s so gorgeously depicted here, this novel will never let you go.”The Boston Globe

“Famed aviator Beryl Markham is a novelist’s dream. . . . [A] wonderful portrait of a complex woman who lived—defiantly—on her own terms.”People (Book of the Week)

Circling the Sun soars.”Newsday

“Captivating . . . [an] irresistible novel.”—The Seattle Times

“Like its high-flying subject, Circling the Sun is audacious and glamorous and hard not to be drawn in by. Beryl Markham may have married more than once, but she was nobody’s wife.”—Entertainment Weekly

“[An] eloquent evocation of Beryl’s daring life.”O: The Oprah Magazine

  • Started well, couldn’t finish

I enjoyed the beginning of the book when Beryl was growing up and she spent time with the native people as a child. I am also interested in her relationship with her father and the horse farm. Once she hit adulthood the whole book changed for me into describing a privileged existence, what the servants brought, what they ate and boring conversation. I find it hard to believe that someone who spent time with native people never talked to them again and thought of them as just servants. I lost interest in the romance also. I couldn’t finish the book

One those rare reads for which after finishing, I had to go back and read the epilogue and first chapter to truly appreciate the beautiful story that had just been told. When I started, I had no idea that I was embarking on a retelling of one of my favorite tales.

I was so happy to find this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I had found "West with the NIght" written by Beryl Markham years ago and loved it so much! Although Circling with the Sun is a novel it fills in some gaps in Beryls life that were not in her book, specifically her relationship with Denys. I know that I will read this book again and again.

I bought this book because I enjoyed The Paris Wife as summer reading. The best I can say is the author writes descriptive prose beautifully with great psychological observations; however, stealing Out of Africa and creating a poor pot boiler with this whiny, boring heroine made it impossible to finish the last quarter of it: To the author I say: Disappointing! Why waste my time? Why sully your artistry and reputation?
  • A role model for young women

This book takes the reader to unfamiliar lands at time when women had few choices. The main character, Beryl, takes us on her journey from childhood to being a young woman. She bucks tradition and becomes a racehorse trainer and later, a pilot. Along the way she makes some bad choices but does not regret them because they help her to grow and learn and become an even stronger person. I enjoyed reading about an adventurous woman and learning about life in Africa at the beginning of the twentieth century.

This was the best read I've had in ages. The second half of the book kept me up till the wee hours. With vivid characters and poetic writing, the time in history and the land of Kenya come alive.

Fantastic plot varies and descriptions of Africa not as interesting as I thought. But good read. Nothing will ever replace Out Of Africa
