Description

A historical western cowboy romance about a mail order bride.

This first episode of The Montana Brides introduces Violet, Iris and Rose Kilburn, Heiresses to the Kilburn family cattle fortune. Rocking Horse Ranch runs five thousand head of cattle but all the ranch hands are getting old. The sisters need someone to run the ranch, so the eldest sister Violet hatches the idea of getting mail order husbands for the three of them. There’s only one problem. Cornell Pollard, the sisters’ guardian and the executor of their estate, doesn’t approve. Violet must challenge Pollard and her own role as his ally to find love and gain control over her own life.
The sisters pick up their prospective grooms from the train station and bring them back to the Ranch. The men stay in a neighboring house until the minister comes at the end of the week to marry them all. Things quickly start to go wrong. Everybody starts butting heads, and Violet finds herself embroiled in a family drama the likes of which Rocking Horse Ranch has never seen before. Will Violet’s plan to get married end in disaster, or can she and her sisters find love with a group of strange men? Are these men what they appear to be, or is something more sinister at work?

  • Just ok, a bit inconsistent, not realistic sometimes

I found it unrealistic that everyone is doing things behind their uncle’s back to “save the ranch” and the uncle doesn’t have a clue. He seems to be an old guy who is out of touch with things, but not mean or vindictive or anything like that. Violet says he never hit any of them and was more like a parent to them than their real parents. Then when they pick up the mail order husbands, everyone decides that the uncle has to go. He’s unreasonable, it’s their inheritance, he should just ride off in the distance and go find something else to do with his life and not be a part of theirs anymore. Seems like extremes if you ask me. Also, they all fall in love within hours of meeting their respective fiancés. No being cautious or slowly getting to know them? They just pair up and go to war for each other like they’ve known them all their lives. Finally, it was unbelievable that Chuck could hit his head against the wall, get knocked out, start bleeding then 10 minutes later he is up walking with Violet as if nothing happened. No checking on his wound, it mysteriously got better and is never mentioned again. The uncle’s recovery is even more implausible. Violet continuously pounds his head against the stairs until she is pried off him, and he can get up and leave the house minutes later! This needs less touting on how wonderful the girls are for running the ranch behind their uncle’s back and more realistic reactions to meeting strangers, arguing with family members and witnessing violence or being violent themselves.

I couldn’t put this book down. it ends abruptly with many questions which is what I believe the author wanted making room for the sequel books.

Kate you have wrote a very fascinating book. I can't wait to read your next book. You make the sisters seem like they are like my own sisters. You also leave us guessing who killed Cornelia. Will you please let me read your next book with Iris and her Mail Order Husband. I wrote my E-mail Address as I have on my note pad and the same for my password. But they keep saying that it is not the same and I am so tired of doing it over and over. All I want is to finish reading your
  • Poorly written. Repetitious dialogue. Waste of time.

This book would lead one to believe this writer is a novice. With the repetitious sentences and child like thought processes it is impossible to enjoy.

Seemingly ridiculous, this book takes 190 pages to span a dull, lackluster day. What's worse, it's only climactic experience is short lived and predictable as the author practically spells out her intentions in western cliche. I was further perturbed to find out that there is no resolution, but again another obvious plot advance with a cliff hanger ending. The only problem? You've created a story that I don't care about, so the cliff is meaningless.
