Description

According to researchers, the vast majority--a whopping 75-98 percent--of the illnesses that plague us today are a direct result of our thought life. What we think about truly affects us both physically and emotionally. In fact, fear alone triggers more than 1,400 known physical and chemical responses in our bodies, activating more than thirty different hormones! Today our culture is undergoing an epidemic of toxic thoughts that, left unchecked, create ideal conditions for illnesses.

Supported by current scientific and medical research, Dr. Caroline Leaf gives readers a prescription for better health and wholeness through correct thinking patterns, declaring that we are not victims of our biology. She shares with readers the "switch" in our brains that enables us to live happier, healthier, more enjoyable lives where we achieve our goals, maintain our weight, and even become more intelligent. She shows us how to choose life, get our minds under control, and reap the benefits of a detoxed thought life.

“Here is an example of active reach: You are working on the toxic thought of saying—out loud or in your mind—a lot of could-have, would-have, should-have, if-only statements. Your active reach step is saying, “I will not say this, I am putting the past behind me”’; or visualizing the situation, event, or issue disappearing in a puff of smoke; or quoting a verse that’s applicable; or doing something fun like smiling, yawning, or tapping your foot.” -An actual quote from this book This book is not founded in Biblical or scientific truth. The author cherry picks some verses to fit her narrative and makes big leaps between correlation and causation in her “research”. Her general advice is that if you’re thinking toxic or negative thoughts, just stop and think about something positive instead (or yawn, because that’s fun!). The author doesn’t acknowledge the importance of truth or authenticity, only positivity. This book preys on people who have shame over mental, and even physical, health issues.

The spiritual and scientific instruction in this book can be life-changing if applied as directed. Every claim can be corroborated by a quick search the Internet. The next book I want to read is "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell former science editor at the "New Yorker". Based on my perusal of the iTunes sample of "Blink", that book will be very complementary to what I've learned in "Switch on your brain".
