Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again . . .

The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady's maid, she can barely believe her luck. It is only when they arrive at his massive country estate that she realizes how large a shadow his late wife will cast over their lives--presenting her with a lingering evil that threatens to destroy their marriage from beyond the grave.

As one reaches the middle of this novel, the reader starts to feel quite at ease in Manderley; it is a home away from home and the reader is a fly on the wall during the most intimate conversations between Maxim and his bride. It is so difficult to put this book down. The reader is compelled to keep reading to see what will happen next.

I came to know about this when I was watching tv in my living room and while changing channels I had come across this show Rebecca. It was already in the middle of the plot so I At first I really wasn’t paying attention to anything until my phone died 😆, that’s when I Gave the show a chance and OH LORD!!!! I WAS HOOKED! I looked up the show/movie and found there was a book to it. DONT GET ME STARTED. I immediately looked it up and that’s where we are now! The movie got in my feelings so I can’t imagine how the book will make me feel😩.

This book has long been a favortie of mine ever since my mother gave it to me at Christmas 40 years ago. I saw the movie first. This story builds tension unexorably …we don’t really know what about….except it involves Maxim’s first wife…and the evil looking Mrs. Danvers makes the point. As we finally see the reason of the tension unfold, we become interested in what is driving these characters. A superb piece of mystery and mood.

A beautifully written, deliciously mysterious, dark and entertaining book. I wished I could listen to it all over again the minute it was finished. The narrator was amazing and brought the book the life just as it would have been if I would have read it myself.

This book came alive in Monte Carlo and kept building in intensity until virtually each page was a story in itself. Even though the plot was clever, the book's power comes from its spellbinding characters. The author's poetic and evocative descriptions of the mansion by the sea and its grounds weave the characters and the land seamlessly into a rich organic tapestry. Splendid beauty and dark disturbing themes entertwined in such a way as to leave me emotionally speechless-often. And I am a man! What a great book.
