After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty.

Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.

Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.

Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything.

They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth.

But a storm is coming...and not everyone can survive its wrath.

The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

This 3 book series had me enthralled! The character development was done so well. The in depth interconnection between the characters and their dragons is so thrilling. The romantic plot between Violet and Xaden is absolutely intoxicating. I AM DEVASTATED about the cliffhanger ending for this 3rd book - left completely and utterly stunned! I Need the next book NOW! My imagination keeps spiraling to think about where the story will lead us next.

Onyx Storm continues to deliver strong character development and rich story expansion, taking the stakes—and the emotions—even higher. I loved the “quest squad” and wished we had more time with that crew. Ridoc and Aotrom’s banter brought much-needed levity to balance the emotional weight of the story. I love their dynamic. And that cliffhanger? The wait for the next book is going to kill me. 😭

Summary: A darkness that inhibits the relationship between hero and Xaden has to keep getting darker so the same story told in the first two books can be repeated. Xaden is bad so no relations allowed, which only makes it better. Never mind this is a completely dysfunctional relationship (guess that is part of why not allowed? If so, whatever, give it a rest). Magic rules got a touch more consistent compared to prior boos in the series, which I appreciated. But then the iridescent dragons crushed any partial rule adherence since they “are magic”, not conduits. But if iridescent dragons are magic, why did our hero’s iridescent dragon get weak due to lack of ambient magic? She clearly creates her own magic (see lightening strikes during duel) but gets tired while flying (attaches to harness over ocean between islands). Lack of consistency eliminates any tension because magic can just do (or not) what ever the story (fanfiction at this point) needs, with no limits. Fine example of “Deus ex magic”. The pronoun game is out of control as well. There are tons of characters in the story, most I can’t keep track of or care about (easy cannon fodder). So chapters that do not name the person whose point of view the reader is seeing, are just confusing and irritating (Imogen’s chapter being the main culprit here, but not the only one). Having the hero be physically weak (excessive physical complaints and injuries) but athletically superb (dual with queen) makes all the physical complaints seem whiny. And annoying. And boring. Hero is either athletic or not, story really needs to pick one. Good story if you skip the relationship stuff, most group discussions (spoiler alert! relationships and sex are the sum total here), and just read dialogue that avoids the above (so ignore 2/3 of the book - much like Twilight IMO). Glad there were no more clumsy, poor, and/or inaccurate efforts at science like previous books.

I loved the end of this book but the first like 60% was just pretty boring to me. I wish the action was more spread throughout the whole thing.
