Description

Forget Murphy—it should be called Minerva's Law.

Paranormal affairs officer Minerva Lucent has always wanted to stand out by making a difference in the supernatural world. Unfortunately, she's only managed to stick out—like a sore thumb. Her stun spells often misfire and freeze people by mistake. Her magical restraints have been known to pull objects to them like magnets. And last week, her truth spell caused a perp to start singing in verse.

But when a coveted guardian position opens up, Minerva's determined to finally show everyone that she's the witch for the job. She makes a plan to redeem her reputation, and she's about to set it in motion, when her old finishing school pal, Roxana Goldenscales, shows up on her doorstep in dire need of assistance.

Can Minerva enact her plan and help Roxana (knock on wand!)? Or will she have to choose between becoming a guardian and being a good friend to her old mate?

Still not convinced? Publisher's Weekly called Mates: Mineva "a delightful, character-driven fantasy novel about a group of supernatural friends helping to prevent an unwanted wedding. It will no doubt bewitch readers with its entrancing plot and relatable cast."

This book was such a fun read! I enjoyed all POVs and getting to know the characters! Everyone is dealing with their own issues but they band together like a true family. Funny, action packed and also some unexpected twists. This book is well written and most definitely entertaining!

Fans of the TV show “Friends” (and non fans) will LOVE this new series from Baker. The inside jokes are extra fun for Friends lovers but it is not necessary to have watched the show to understand or enjoy this book. Each of the six mates has their own quirks and issues they are working through. I love reading books that have different POVs and lots of character development and I’m excited to see how this story develops in the next book!

So this read is just FUN! I loved this urban fantasy take on FRIENDS (get it? Mates = friends in British/Australian/NZ English). A group of misfits who have very different career paths and personalities have enough in common to be comfortable friends who can walk on in each other’s places and crash on the couch. The main character of this book in the series is Minerva, a witch with a good heart who is trying her very best to follow her father’s super cop legacy. She wants to be a Guardian and protect the supernaturals who are not always treated the way they should be. After many failed attempts her goal and a potential love interest are in sight! A former friend whose life could not be more different lands back in the picture and upsets the balance of the mostly predictable life Minerva and her friends have been living. Now it’s waking up with a princess roomie and pigeon droppings on the bedspread. Can’t wait to see what misadventures await the crew in the next book!

Minerva and her friends appear normal at first glance. Or at least as normal as could be expected for a witch in law enforcement, a vampire who’s a struggling actor, a dragon shifter who really has no idea how to live in the real world, etc. They live among humans by glamouring themselves to appear human, but in reality they live a fantastic, magical, super-secret life—or not. They each have their struggles that have drawn them together as a ragtag band of “magical misfits.” But Minerva just knows that she’s going to get the hang of her magic someday and become one of the great guardians who protect the world from daimoni. If she can just figure out what’s messing with her power, and get rid of this pigeon that thinks it’s her soulmate, life will be good. This is one of the most clever, witty books I’ve read in some time. Without even knowing much about the world of Friends, I was able to pick up on the nods and laugh hysterically at the characters as they (not super successfully) tried to figure out how to fit into a world of humans and magic. And beyond the humor and the fun magic-action, the themes of friendship, loyalty, and sacrifice make this book more than just a light weekend read.
  • Might be my new favorite series!

Bridget Baker knocks it out of the park with this new Urban Fantasy book. Mates gives me Harley Merlin vibes with its band of misfit creatures. I love how you can tell the different voices of each character in their chapters and that you get some new insights to things happening but also all new information. I couldn’t put the book down. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. This might be my new favorite!

Such a fun book! Magical Misfits come together as friends and navigate a world where humans and paranormal live intertwined. Though the humans are unaware, for the most part, of the paranormal around them. Read Minerva’s story where everything she knows about herself comes into question, and she leans on her friends for support.
