Description

The Ghost Brigades are the Special Forces of the Colonial Defense Forces, elite troops created from the DNA of the dead and turned into the perfect soldiers for the CDF's toughest operations. They're young, they're fast and strong, and they're totally without normal human qualms.

The universe is a dangerous place for humanity—and it's about to become far more dangerous. Three races that humans have clashed with before have allied to halt our expansion into space. Their linchpin: the turncoat military scientist Charles Boutin, who knows the CDF's biggest military secrets. To prevail, the CDF must find out why Boutin did what he did.

Jared Dirac is the only human who can provide answers -- a superhuman hybrid, created from Boutin's DNA, Jared's brain should be able to access Boutin's electronic memories. But when the memory transplant appears to fail, Jared is given to the Ghost Brigades.

At first, Jared is a perfect soldier, but as Boutin's memories slowly surface, Jared begins to intuit the reason's for Boutin's betrayal. As Jared desperately hunts for his "father," he must also come to grips with his own choices. Time is running out: The alliance is preparing its offensive, and some of them plan worse things than humanity's mere military defeat…

  • Not as good as the first one but not terrible

I loved the first book, so I was eager to see the story continue here. It took a wide turn off that trajectory until the very end. The story was okay but didn’t have the humor the first book did. It wasn’t as fast either. With all that said, the ending was great and hopefully is bringing us back to the original story line of book one…we will see, because I’m buying book three now.
  • Great Follow Up

A great follow up to the first in the series. Still worth a read. Can’t wait to start the next one.

The ghost brigades is the best book I have read so far!nit was sad, dramatic and action packed, with great suspense! John Scalzi is one of my favorite authors! This book had me in suspense and wonder and I couldn’t stop reading it! I loved this book!
  • Not great, not terrible

If you liked Old Man’s War this one will probably keep your attention. Moves at a brisk pace and is pretty easy reading. But the world feels underdeveloped. Entire species, planets, or star systems are reduced to inscrutable monoliths where “the Consu” or “the Rraey” or “the Obin” think, act, and are described as giant singular nebulous blocks. The big-bad is a Bond villain whose motivations I didn’t buy. The second entry in the series fails to adequately nail the character development and lore that would make it a far more engrossing world and series. And although we see glimpses of characters from Book 1, the shift in POV (and from first person to third person) felt disjointed. What we’re left with is the literary equivalent of tactics over strategy: a quick and reasonably entertaining story that is also immediately forgettable.
  • Solid sequel

Most sequels tend to leave me with a heavy sense of buyer’s remorse, but TGB was a satisfying follow up to OMW. Good work, Johnny!
  • Interesting, but….

Interesting, but not up to the standards of “Old Man’s War.” Many of the characters seemed one-dimensional and undeveloped. The dialog was often flat and forced for my tastes. It is hard indeed to write a sequel.
