An alien scientist invents the Intergalactic Inversion Drive, an engine system that transcends warp drive -- and the U.S.S Enterprise™ will be the first to test it! This book’s been around a while, but it holds up beautifully, even in light of all of the developments within the Trek universe since it was written. I like to return to it every few years, not only for nostalgia and such, but also because of the way she makes it truly Trek - beyond sci-fi and into the humanities, philosophy, ethics, etc. A pleasure to read and re-read.

Diane Duane's ultra-imaginative, hard SF approach to Star Trek is refreshingly unique, and this is one of her very best.
