Description

Carolina Johnson had the life everyone wanted. A solid marriage of twenty years. A gorgeous house in the most desirable neighborhood. Friends at the country club. Yet, somehow, she always felt the other shoe would drop. And drop it did! When she discovered her husband’s affair with a girl half his age. Even more devastating, she’s pregnant. Now divorced, she has to start over in a lake house with too many issues to list, a neighbor who doesn’t like her and zero friends. To make matters worse, her outrageously rude former mother-in-law shows up and expects to spend a few days. At forty years of age, Carolina has to start her life over from scratch and draw on the last vestiges of strength she has to make a life for herself. A new life, new problems, and new relationships…can Carolina find out what matters the most in life and discover what true love really looks like? Or will she refuse to let go of the past and the bitterness that threatens to steal her happiness? This women’s divorce fiction book will have you rooting for the heroine and everything she has to overcome. Welcome to Laurel Cove and all the loveable, quirky characters that live here!

It was hard to finish this book about an abused woman. She’s isolated, financially exploited & emotionally neglected & abused. All along you hope she’ll grow a back bone. She leans into her religion which tells her to make herself smaller (literally & figuratively) & not stand up for herself. The Bible verses are literally quoted to support the notion she should silence herself & suffer emotional abuse. It’s disturbing to imagine that religion teaches women to behave in this way. Other strong characters enter the picture to defend & advocate for the protagonist, all the while we hope she’ll do it for herself, yet never does. The book mentions several times the weight of the main character & her starving herself due to extreme emotional distress, then praises her weight loss which occurred because of mental anguish vs any health means. The book wraps up with her never being truly vindicated for the abuse she suffers & her surrendering herself to yet another man proving that her worth is contingent on the love of a man. If the author is reflecting on her own relationship with God & men at all, I pray for her freedom from the toxicity & abuse of the Church.
