“A deeply heartfelt romance novel.” Marie Claire

An unabashed ode to living with, and despite, pain and mortality.” —The New York Times Book Review

A New York Times bestselling author, National Book Award finalist, and “one of our greatest living writers” (Shondaland) reimagines the love story in this fresh and seductive novel about a young woman seeking joy while healing from loss.

Feyi Adekola wants to learn how to be alive again.

It’s been five years since the accident that killed the love of her life and she’s almost a new person now—an artist with her own studio and sharing a brownstone apartment with her ride-or-die best friend, Joy, who insists it’s time for Feyi to ease back into the dating scene. Feyi isn’t ready for anything serious, but a steamy encounter at a rooftop party cascades into a whirlwind summer she could have never imagined: a luxury trip to a tropical island, decadent meals in the glamorous home of a celebrity chef, and a major curator who wants to launch her art career.

She’s even started dating the perfect guy, but their new relationship might be sabotaged before it has a chance by the overwhelming desire Feyi feels every time she locks eyes with the one person in the house who is most definitely off-limits—his father.

This new life she asked for just got a lot more complicated, and Feyi must begin her search for real answers. Who is she ready to become? Can she release her past and honor her grief while still embracing her future? And, of course, there’s the biggest question of all—how far is she willing to go for a second chance at love? Akwaeke Emezi’s vivid and passionate writing takes us deep into a world of possibility and healing, and the constant bravery of choosing love against all odds.

A love like this was real, which is why it was a pleasure to escape into this messy love story. I found feyi’s character extremely frustrating to follow. Her hesitation to love Alim because of his kids that she had no real relationship with.

Happy to begin my New Year getting to know these characters and hearing their story of love. The fear of possibility is illustrated so eloquently throughout this read. Definitely recommend.

This book was not what I was expecting. It was cringeworthy at points and some storylines felt really random. Struggled to finish it and definitely skimmed most parts of the last 100 or so pages. Not terrible, but not my favorite.

Disliked the ending but overall a good read. Was easily intrigued from the first chapter and finished book in 3 days. It’s a bit draggy and some may consider it a slow burn at time. If I can give it three words, it’ll be; Funny, Messy and predictable.

It was an interesting story about a young woman grieving that kept me turning page after page. I thought it was a great story, however something about it was missing for me. Definitely worth the read, don’t let my star rating be a deterrent. This book delves a lot into what it means to have loved and lost, —and then what it means to try to love again. There are some very well written pieces on remembering your first true love and what it means to move beyond that, and the dialogue between characters in conflict is rich and meaningful.
  • Well put together Sensual Read!

This book intrigued me from the beginning. The plot twist it took from the beginning had me questioning “Well where is this story line going !?.” This book was well written beginning to end. I was expecting a plot twist at the very end for a shocking finale if you will.Nevertheless, I’m glad I came across this read on “Book Tok”!

Such a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful book. The writing is absolutely gorgeous, and so incredibly descriptive. At some points you might want to choke the main character and others she’s just someone who is lost and trying to find her way back to something. I loved Feyi. I loved everyone in this book really. And could relate to most, if not all of the characters. Would give 10 stars if I could, and I can’t wait to see the movie. I wish there was a sequel to their love story 😪.
