Description

An Apple Books Classic edition.

Gertrude Chandler Warner was a first-grade teacher when she wrote The Boxcar Children about orphaned siblings Henry, Jess, Violet, and Benny Alden. The Alden kids face two choices: Go live with a grandfather they’ve never met, or find a place of their own to call home. They choose the latter, eventually taking shelter in an abandoned boxcar hidden in the middle of a forest. Soon, older brother Henry finds a job, while the girls cook, clean, and take care of little Benny. The foursome decorate their home with “treasures” from a nearby garbage dump and even build a pool—but just when they’re feeling secure and settled, Violet falls ill, forcing the Aldens to seek medical care in town.

This delightful children’s book was so well received, Warner wrote 18 more books about the Aldens before her death. Ghostwriters continued her work, writing over 140 additional Boxcar books. Discover for yourself why people around the world still read this beloved series.

I first read this book in elementary school and it’s always held a spot in my heart. I was delighted to read it again as a much older adult and thoroughly enjoyed the wholesomeness of the writing. It’s a wonderful tale of pleasant children and their adventures.

I was eight years of age, when the school librarian recommended this book/series for me to read. I passed this series onto my daughter when she was about the same age. Thirty years I have a granddaughter named Violet. (One of the boxcar characters is named Violet)

This book has always been my favorite. My third grade teacher read it in class many years ago and ever since then I’ve just fallen in love with the series. I haven’t had the pleasure of reading the whole series but I do plan on doing so.

This book is just as good as it was when I was a kid. The only problem I had with the book was that there were a few mistakes in the book, but other than that really great book!!!

Marvelous and completely underrated. This book is one of the few that I remember from my childhood. I love this book. It teaches children the importance of family, resilience, respect, hard work and self sufficiency. I loved every single character (except maybe bratty Bennie). Just a classic. Then and now.

I love the storyline and the narrator! Uplifting cute little story. I’m in my menopause and I like to sleep listening to audiobooks, for my insomnia. This is perfect for me. It’s a positive storyline with a soothing voice.
