Will scandalous secrets stand in the way of a second chance at love?

Miss Jane Quayle excels at invention. How else could the sheltered daughter of an English gentleman create lurid gothic novels so infamous someone wants their author silenced forever?  Fortunately, Jane has taken steps to protect herself, first by assuming a pen name, and second, by taking up residence at remote Dunnock Castle, surrounded by rugged scenery that might have been ripped from the pages of one of her books. Her true identity remains a secret, until one dark and stormy night . . .

After years of spying for the British army, Thomas Sutherland doubts the Highlands will ever feel like home again. Nevertheless, thanks to a quirk of Scottish inheritance law, he’s now the Earl of Magnus, complete with a crumbling castle currently inhabited by a notorious novelist. When the writer turns out to be the woman Thomas once wooed, suspicions rise even as mutual sparks reignite. As danger closes in, can Jane and Thomas overcome their pasts to forge a future together?

  • Enjoyed the twist on a usual plot

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I especially appreciated the way the heroine was a strong female character and not a victim, as is so often the case in this genre. I also liked the depiction of the Scots in this book. The people weren’t portrayed as some stereotypes or guttural foul mouthed highlanders, but as interesting and intelligent people with Scottish personalities and hearts. The hero wasn’t perfect, but he evolved and the HEA was a well deserved one for all the characters. The bad guys were put in their respective places and not allowed to affect the overall happiness of the good folks. Overall a fun tale with just enough drama to keep it interesting.

A fun romp through the highlands. Castles, mystery, romance, spies and noms de plume galore. A nice read to relax with and enjoy.

I enjoyed this book even with its slow start. I almost put it down so I’m glad I decided to continue reading. Second chance romance is one of my favorite troupes. With seven years apart and both lives filled with secrets Jane and Thomas had many walls to crumble before trust could form. If they can get passed their lies and survive the threat that awaits. They just might have a future ahead of them.

This is one of my favorite so far by Susanna Craig! I’ve read several more than once and think I’ll enjoy this one again, too. The text is sophisticated, but isn’t above the reader’s heads. I didn’t want to put it down and finished it in just a few days. The hardest part is waiting for the next book to be released!
