Circling the Sun is a well-written masterpiece by Paula McLain. As McLain tells the story of the life of Beryl Markham, a horse trainer and aviator, she demonstrates a mastery of the political, economic and ecological aspects of Markham’s time. The book gives us insight into the life and work of Beryl Markham, an English woman, who had scandals throughout her life. However, she earned a good name in the fields of horse training and flying.
In the book, Beryl Markham, the main character, lives a full life, maintaining relationships while at the same time remaining dedicated to her job. She demonstrates her excellence and in so doing attracts male characters, including the Prince of Wales. She does not seem to care much about the rumors and scandals around her. Through her dedication to her work, Markham became the first woman to fly solo east-to-west across the Atlantic, and the person to fly non-stop from Europe to North America.
