This was a beautifully written book that I greatly enjoyed reading. I skipped some of the flashbacks - they were much less interesting than the main story line. The main character was a strong, brave, and resilient young woman, who lived through unimaginable times. The SS officer story seemed implausible though, as it seemed unlikely he would risk his life for a newborn, but he was in love and had strong morals and values despite his affiliation. The naivety of Eva also seemed unlikely, and the descriptions of the evil monster and his evil henchmen were too flattering.

The first chapter will draw you in while simultaneously crushing your soul. But it is such a good read. Highly recommend.

After reading The Berlin Girl (another excellent book by this author), naturally, I had to read this one. It tugged on my heartstrings as a mother, as someone who wanted to be a midwife, and as someone’s who’s past is thick in Germany’s history.
  • Both of Mandy’s books are page turners! Thanks for jumping into writing, Mandy!

Excellent representation of Nazi control. Surprisingly captive and suspenseful while sad and haunting overall a 9 1/2 in my opinion

As a nurse, I loved the medical jargon and the descriptions of birth from the perspective of a midwife. If you are a fan of Call the Midwife at all, you will like this book too. As a mother, some of the stories broke my heart and were extremely emotional. As a lover of WWII stories, this was everything I wanted it to be. The emotion and writing so raw I could almost imagine the author was indeed there.

This debut novel was riveting. The author created characters of depth as well as a daunting emotional landscape that made this reader think about the story and the people long after I finished reading the book. As a historical work of fiction, it held fast to the events that took place in Germany and the horror of the times, but never lost sight of an individual's choice to act with love and humanity in the face of evil.
