These ideologies were liberalism, communism, and fascism. Of those three, Deneen writes that only liberalism is left standing. In the opinion of Deneen, people have started to forget that liberalism is only an ideology. It is not the end-all of politics in societies. Patrick Deneen put forth the idea that liberalism has failed humans because it has been successful and “won” out against the three main ideologies. Liberalism has failed in that it has made humans more autonomous and has allowed the state to take over many areas of society rather than having many smaller, civic communities. Deneen warns that liberalism could be the collapse of society as we know it.
