Description

A guide to all kinds of addiction from a star who has struggled with heroin, alcohol, sex, fame, food and eBay, that will help addicts and their loved ones make the first steps into recovery

“This manual for self-realization comes not from a mountain but from the mud...My qualification is not that I am better than you but I am worse.” Russell Brand

With a rare mix of honesty, humor, and compassion, comedian and movie star Russell Brand mines his own wild story and shares the advice and wisdom he has gained through his fourteen years of recovery. Brand speaks to those suffering along the full spectrum of addiction—from drugs, alcohol, caffeine, and sugar addictions to addictions to work, stress, bad relationships, digital media, and fame. Brand understands that addiction can take many shapes and sizes and how the process of staying clean, sane, and unhooked is a daily activity. He believes that the question is not “Why are you addicted?” but "What pain is your addiction masking? Why are you running—into the wrong job, the wrong life, the wrong person’s arms?"

Russell has been in all the twelve-step fellowships going, he’s started his own men’s group, he’s a therapy regular and a practiced yogi—and while he’s worked on this material as part of his comedy and previous bestsellers, he’s never before shared the tools that really took him out of it, that keep him clean and clear. Here he provides not only a recovery plan, but an attempt to make sense of the ailing world.

I don’t agree with Russell’s politics and have honestly despised him at times as the worst kind of person but I found this book helpful, sincere, honest, and moving. I was pleasantly surprised and thankful for the sharing of his struggles and deepest demons. I would recommend this book to anybody and everybody.

Brand has really come a month way since his frizzy haired Sarah Marshal days. I remember watching that move back in 2010 and being like,” God, there is nothing likable about this guy whatsoever. Why do so many people I know think he’s talented?” Well, after 5 pages of this book my opinion of him forever changed; this guy is what the future of what humanity should strive to be. Read this book if you want to change your life for good and for the better.

An honest and personal account of the 12 Steps from a witty and engaging gentleman. I enjoyed how he conveyed his experience from a first-person point of view that included additional personal considerations for us... The readers. Very well written with a lot of words I was not familiar with, but enjoyed looking up :) Thanks for the education Russell Brand!

I have been in program for 7 years and have read a lot, but no writing has moved me like this book. It is real and powerful and pulls no punches. I occasionally use my book highlighter, but found that I was continually highlighting every page, sometimes pages. This book was inspired and in turn inspirational and I will use it in my recovery and in my help of others. Thank you for writing these words!
  • Recovery, Freedom From Our Addictions

Absolutely fabulous! For anyone! Even those of us without “severe” addictions, but with the common busy-body, resentful, judgmental, impatient, intolerant, arrogance sort. I’m a senior citizen, without any “addictions”, but I smiled through every page in gratitude as wisdom and sincere truths poured off the pages. Russell is a spiritual Being, clothed in unexpected pop culture disguise. Be prepared to meet your truer self - and your own Awakening, as he walks you through this amazing spiritual treatise. He has done an amazing job of putting the best of spiritual pointeers, from Buddha to the present, into this unassuming yet life altering book. Thank you, Russell!
