Description

The first book in the fantasy Ascension series that New York Times bestselling author Susan Dennard called "perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas."

On the day of her Presenting, in front of the entire Byern Court, seventeen-year-old Cyrene Strohm's lifelong plans come to fruition when she's chosen for one of the most prestigious positions in her homeland--an Affiliate to the Queen.

Or so she thinks.

When Cyrene receives a mysterious letter and an unreadable book, she finds nothing is as it seems. Thrust into a world of dangerous political intrigue and deadly magic, Cyrene's position only grows more treacherous when she finds herself drawn to the one man she can never have...

King Edric himself.

Cyrene must decide if love is truly worth the price of freedom.

This book!! It continuously had me on edge. Right up to the VERY end. Which, btw, is a bit cliffy. Like, where is this going to go from here? The world she paints is so vivid, right down to the smallest details. This was such a roller coaster. The deep feelings elicited swing from sad, excited, to mad and then ecstatic. The end had my stomach in knots. All the twists and turns had my head spinning! I'm still not sure I understand what happened. I feel like I need to re-read the entire series again.
  • Left a lot to be desired.

Unfortunately, the storyline really wasn’t fleshed out. The novel skims the major points you’d expect of a fantasy novel, but with very little detail/dialogue. Further, the author went into very little detail when going over each character’s background. The characters seem to have no real motivations for anything they do. I really wanted to like this book, but I couldn’t fully immerse myself in it.
  • Amazing!
